We have been led to believe that it's going to fail, then it's going to succeed and then it will fail again, it's been quite a rollercoaster. This has really tested the participating countries' resolve to tackle this issue. This is made tougher because of the economic crisis which has caused hardships for so many people and so it's understandable that the economy is at the front of people's minds.

In the last comprehensive performance assessment of Reigate and Banstead Council, the Independent Inspectors pointed out how poor the Council was at strategy and long term planning. It is quite clear that they haven't had an original idea and are reactive rather than proactive; no wonder they end up wasting tax payers' money.

In fact 20 years ago, when I lived in Bristol, my job was designing communication satellite equipment. Today, via the World Wide Web it's possible to keep an eye on the exploration of other planets. Two robot rovers are driving around on Mars taking pictures, studying rocks and avoiding obstacles. In my opinion pictures from their panoramic cameras are quite stunning. They do remind me of something close by. Here on Earth the potholes and large cracks in the road surfaces, in and around Reigate, are quite similar in appearance. Looking at some of the Mars picture you could conclude that there's a less hostile environment for cyclists and pedestrians on the red planet than here in this town. The Council's neglect has resulted in the roads being in their poorest state for a decade. When will they launch themselves into action? In another decade?

Jon Cousens of "London Redhill Airport" (Letters, 16/10/03) replies to Councillor Sylvia Gammon by saying that in the public debate there are those who are for the development of Redhill Aerodrome. I have yet to come across any at all among the residents of Earlswood and Whitebushes; I can only assume those for the plan are limited to shareholders in the said aerodrome. And any "indifference" to the proposals tends to disappear very rapidly once residents see the map of the proposed Airport, filling almost every available square metre between the A23 and M23 as it does.
