Years of campaigning by Lib Dem Councillors from Meadvale & St. Johns & Reigate Central Wards have finally paid off. Money set aside by the developers of the Omnibus building (the old Reigate Bus Garage) is to be used to construct a Zebra crossing in Lesbourne Road and crossing points at the junction of Chart Lane and Blackborough Road.
Earlier this year a study of pedestrian movements showed that the majority of people cross Lesbourne Road between the junctions of Howard Road and Bell Street. Safety sight lines, along with road and footpath widths dictated that the Zebra should cross the road between the Venture Inn and the Omnibus building.
There have been three reported accidents since 2001 where people have been injured. Pedestrians walking to and from Reigate town centre often find it difficult to cross Lesbourne Road. Children walking to Reigate Priory, Reigate Parish and St Mary's Schools are especially vulnerable.
It is also proposed that kerb build-outs are to be constructed at the junction of Blackborough Road, Chart Lane and West Road to provide an additional uncontrolled crossing points.
