An O2 proposed 15-metre mobile telephone mast, to be erected among trees, behind garages in Arbutus Close was refused by members of the Planning Committee today.
After a campaign by local residents (Meadvale Against Masts), with help from Lib Dem Ward Councillor Graham Norman, the Planning Committee were almost unanimous in their view that it was inappropriate. Impassioned speeches of objection by local residents as well as Lib Dem Ward Councillors Graham and Steve Kulka convinced the committee to vote a refusal. Despite the importance of the issue, the Tory ward councillor for Meadvale didn't even bother to turn up.
O2 already have planning permission for a mast in Blackthorn Close. This was obtained by a council clerical 'cock-up'. The application was approved by default because it 'timed-out' without ever being checked by a planning officer. This was spotted and discussions were started between the applicant and council officers without any notification to Ward Councillors.
