Commuters and holiday makers using resident parking
The centre of Horley has excellent transport links, making it relatively easy to get to Gatwick Airport and London via Horley train station. However, this convenience has been recognised by commuters and holiday makers who have taken advantage of residential roads that do not have parking restrictions.
Residents who live on roads surrounding Horley train station and in south Horley more generally, have told us of the issues they have been facing, with cars from commuters or holiday makers completely taking up on-street parking spaces, as well as damaging grass verges. This has caused problems such as no spaces for guests of those residents of the road, but also no space for emergency vehicles or carers.
Liberal Democrat campaigner, Chris Coghlan, says: “it’s unfair that residents and their free parking is taken advantage of by commuters and holiday makers. This could cause serious issues if it hasn’t already in some case. The Lib Dems want to support local people in reporting and finding a solution to this.”
Each year Surrey County Council launches a parking review which assesses parking restrictions, but this can often be a difficult process to navigate, and comprehensive submissions can be necessary. The next review process begins in September 2024, meaning it is necessary to submit evidence for review before the end of August 2024.
Horley Liberal Democrats will be launching a survey and consultation of the roads in close proximity to Horley train station, and across Horley. We will support creating a proper submission to the parking review and ensure that fair parking restrictions are in place on residential roads with free parking, without simply passing the issue to neighbouring roads.
Residents have explained their experiences with Surrey County Council and the parking review to be unhelpful in explaining the process. There is a lack of reasonable support for residents which needs to be addressed.
